I remember Victory (Vegetable)Gardens (I had one), shortages of, and rationing stamps for, shoes, sugar, meat, butter, and gasolene/kerosene. War stamps and war bonds, selling war bonds/stamps in the lobby of movie theaters, scrap drives (metals, paper, old rags, rubber), blackouts air raid drills, block wardens, Draft Boards in basements of schools, Windows taped up and equipped with blackout curtains. In those days "CD" had the meaning of Civilian Defense.OPA price ceilings etc Our Church Choir Director had a son, Archie Stone, who had recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD in June of 1941 and as an Ensign had been assigned to the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, T. H. (Territory of Hawaii). Within 6 months, Archie Stone and almost all of his shipmates, and his ship were destroyed on that fateful Sunday morning........This sad story was the first of many that would be taking place repeatedly over the next 3 and 1/2 years.....
