I spent part of the WW Two years at 2 Gedney Way, living in the house also once occupied by Emeritus and his young family. My dad was the Block Air Raid Warden and he and his neighbors wore those big white steel pot helmets while on duty, and he was in charge of the white stirrup pump we kept in the hall closet. One of his aides was Bob Strickland, NFA teacher Louis Strickland's teen-aged son. During a blackout drill, a young couple in a car were necking on Gidney Avenue behind NJHS, with the radio playing (and glowing in the dark). Bob, on patrol, rapped on their steamed-up windshield and told them to turn off the radio. Needless to say, the guy was a mite upset. Bob had a near miss at becoming another casualty of the War on the home front right then and there.
