I posted this exactly 7 years ago and I'll repeat it for those who hav'nt seen it.....these were my recollections of "Decoration Day"..........I remember the Decoration(Memorial) Day Parades with: everyone getting their places/spaces early; a high level of activity and drinking at all the Broadway Bars, which went through the day and into the night; people on the sidewalks selling artificial red poppies in support of the Veterans of the Great War (which came to be known as World War I after WWII started); and Veterans of the Great War who lost both legs and pushed themselves around on a square piece of wood mounted on little roller wheels while selling pencils arranged in a cup and the red poppies; Street Vendors selling flags, balloons, hotdogs, roasted peanuts; the leading unit of the parade was always the Newburgh Police Department, headed by the Motorcycles and then the Chief of Police in an open car and all of the police force, not on duty, marching behind; all of the marching band units from high schools in the region and from professional bands and from various civic organization bands, (that's what I miss the most in parades today - the Number and Variety of the Marching Bands); all of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Mens Clubs, Womens Clubs, Military units (National/State Guard, Naval Reserve); and after the parade, people would drift off to family gatherings for picnics, to the Bars for serious drinking or for other "pursuits of happiness"........
