Yes, Open it up, install an external antenna connection, you could open up an old Wireless router, or just get a mini UHF connector or an SMC connector, what every you use, then connect up a decent antenna.

That means using a whip for portable use, or if you are in a car, then use a High gain vertical.
For home base, just connect a yagi. almost any square of copper wire will also make a massive difference in range.

Of course you could just look on Ebay and buy a Walki Talki with 400 -470 mhz range, 5 watts out and program in your own channels. That way you won't have to do any modifications.
