Well . . . I'll have to think about that. "Horrorible and painful" seem like the wrong description for anything that is truly beautiful. I guess I'm playing the "definition of terms" game again. What is "horror" and what is "beauty"? (Those of you who are bored by this game can stop reading now.)

Getting a root canal is painful - - but is it "horrible"? I'd say no - - if something is horrible it causes a feeling of repugnance. Although I don't like the PAIN of the dentist, I don't feel repugnance for the dentist - - I freely choose to go.

The ultimate result of a trip to the dentist is good for you - - but is it a "beautiful" experience? It depends on what you mean by beauty. (Do I hear screams of anguish?)

My position is that challenging experiences that push us to the edge CAN be beautiful, but "horrible" experiences that cause us true pain are NOT "beautiful" - - even though they may be good for us. The dicitonary says that beauty is "The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality." Horrible, painful experiences don't meet that definition.

The Taboo course could be said to be beautiful, at least in parts, because it brings truth to light. The Taboo course causes embarrassment and discomfort - - but not real pain. And even though it causes discomfort, it is not "horrible" because we do not feel repugnance for it.

Hey, where did everybody go? It's lonely here, talking to myself!
