I think what Campbell meant was that horror and pain IS beautiful in and of itself. I know personally, times in my life where I felt the most discomfort were immensely beautiful times filled with growth and connection to my spirit. When all of our external distractions are stripped away, we can really see what is left. The beauty in each of us. Even so, the process of stripping away can be quite painful. If you look deeper into the quote, it is not a half-full vs. half-empty mentality, but rather, in my eyes, a way to look at life and see everything with wonder and amazement. I personally know that in my life I often choose the seemingly harder road in order to see what I see there and experience growth and learning in the process. And to finish off the quote from a speech Joseph Campbell gave… “AND IT’S SPECTACULAR”. This is not in the official quote, but I know he said it and perhaps it should be.
