A couple of suggestions:

Take a class in something that interests you.
Join a book club that meets to discuss books -- check with local bookstores and coffee shops.
Do volunteer work not just during the holidays but year round.
Look for an outdoor activity group that plans outings (something like the Sierra Club) where the emphasis is on the activity, not meeting others.
Really, anything that gets you out among others is good, because you are unlikely to meet friends of either gender hiding at home.
Read the book, If the Buddha Dated.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.
