I was taking 1200 mg of Lithium a day (2 in the am, and 2 in the pm), but my last level was too high. It was in the high normal range, but pdoc said with the hot weather, and if I sweat too much, I will get toxic, so he knocked me down to 900 mgs/day.

Lithium is an excellent drug....but there are side effects you have to watch for. At my higher dose, I developed a tremor in my hands. Made it hard to write. You have to drink lots of fluids everyday.....or your level will get too high because you are dehydrated. If you get sick (vomiting or diahrea) you have to stop taking the drug until you feel better....dehydration again.

Lab work is only every 3 months. He checks my kidney function, my lithium level, and my thyroid levels. Lithium will kill the thyroid gland eventually.....so you will have to be on thyroid meds at some point. Lithium binds to the sites on the thyroid gland tricking the brain into not making thyroid hormone. Your TSH goes through the roof.

Research it throughly......I'd try it if you've never been on it. It keeps me on an even keel (as even as I get), and I just watch myself for the side effects. They really are not that bad....
