I think there is some genetic component. I think we are born with our basic natures. But I think environment can play a huge role, especially for the worse.

Could Matt have picked up on his dad's negativity toward you?

My kids both have better self esteem than I had (or have still). It's miraculous. I also tried to encourage them more than I was encouraged (which wasn't a lot). I think their dad has low self esteem in a different way than I do. He is in denial about it and tries to project that he is the greatest. I am a bundle of self doubts and I tend to wear them on my sleeve.

So, who knows. I'm glad my kids have tougher shells than I do. I think it is hard to build self esteem as an adult. Keep letting Matt know all the good things that you love about him.

And I think a little gentle criticism is OK too, I have high expectations for my kids and they know it and sometimes they think I expect too much. I just tell them I am as hard on myself as I am on them.

Hugs,

Liz
