Reports: 'CSI' Actors Fox, Eads Fired

LOS ANGELES - Two stars of the CBS hit television series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" were fired for breach of contract, KCBS-TV and Variety reported Thursday.

Actors Jorja Fox and George Eads, who play investigators Sara Sidle and Nick Stokes, were fired after asking for more money to stay on the show, according to the reports.

Danica Smith, publicist for both Fox and Eads, told The Associated Press that Fox was fired Wednesday but did not have details. Smith could not confirm whether Eads was fired.

A CBS spokesman said the network had no comment.

Eads didn't show up for work Thursday, the first day of production for the next season, according to the news station and Variety, which posted a story on its Web site Thursday.

The actors were in the fifth of their seven-year contracts.

Though a search was under way for their replacements, it's unclear whether show creators will recast the characters or develop new ones, the reports said.

The show picked up four Emmy nominations Thursday, including one for best drama series.

...the plot revolves around two CSI's who are killed in the line of duty in an explosion, and the rest of the team works overtime to solve this one...the show must go on, both ON and OFF screen!

[> [> [> My friend sent me that article this morning, and it took at least 5 min. for it to sink in. Honestly, I sat in front of my computer and cried. The whole situation is stupid. CSI is the #1 show on TV... why can't TPTB dig into their pockets and give them a little more money? The whole cast and crew are headed to Vegas on Mon. to start shooting - how the heck do they plan to re-write the season premiere in 3 days?! Methinks CBS had no idea such an uproar would start up over this... umpteen petitions have been started already, and calls have be coming into CBS all morning. I've included some contact numbers/e-mail address INSIDE... -- DJEgirl, 14:34:12 07/16/04 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> Thanks for the contacts. It will be interesting to see if TPTB stick to their decision, or whether this is all posturing on both sides. Hopefully both sides will come to their senses over the weekend, and everybody (inculding us fans!) can get back to work. -- Julie, 15:29:40 07/16/04 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> I'm sorry, DJEgirl, but I can't cry over this spilt milk. It's like athletic salaries. I find it hard to sympathize with people making $2.2 million a year thinking that they are ill-treated. Of course, the hours are long, but that minimal pay far exceeds what ordinary mortals earn, and like athletes, these folks seem to forget, that even as entertainers, they can't do it without their teammates! -- Postrider. Bring on the newcomers--or bring back the oldgoers--just give us more good scripts! That's entertainment!, 17:59:14 07/16/04 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> [> No need to apologize, buddy... I was probably just being pathetic anyway. I believe both sides are at fault, but I feel the outcome is extreme - why make fans suffer the loss of two great (and beloved) characters instead of simply saying, "No, your current salary is fine"? -- DJEgirl... moving past the pissed-off phase and settling into devestation, 18:16:09 07/16/04 Fri [1]

You might have already seen this, but I found more information here, at Elsye’s CSI website: http://members.aol.com/JRD203/csi-news.htm

I'll just copy and paste:

Jun 16 2004 - Latest news. Apparently all the actors on CSI were asked to “send in a formal letter assuring the network that they would report to work as scheduled for the start of production on the show's fifth season,” said Variety.

EADS: When the Eads showed up late for a 6:15 a.m. early call on the set on July 15th (the first day of shooting for season five), he was sent a termination letter soon afterward. Eads' publicist, Danica Smith, had at press time (15th) not confirmed the firing. One trade paper said “Eads took it one step further by failing to show up for work Thursday (July 15), the first day of shooting for "CSI's" fifth season.” According to sources, however, “Eads did comply with the network's request to submit his letter.”

FOX: Danica Smith, Fox's (and Eads) publicist, did confirm that Fox was fired on Wednesday. Variety went on to report that “Fox was understood to have been sent a similar termination letter July 14th,” adding that CBS terminated Fox's contract after they failed to receive her letter by 5:00 p.m. Variety reported that “sources close to Fox said she had returned the letter and was surprised and mystified when she was fired.” Variety also said in an early report that “Fox took the more passive-agressive route by not responding to a letter asking her if she had any such sick-out plans herself.”

Industry sources said on late Thursday that both Eads and Fox “were let go two years early from their deals, with CBS invoking "breach of contract" as the reason.” Reportedly both actors had approached the network about a salary increase for the fifth season. “According to sources,” said Variety, “Eads, Fox and regulars Paul Guilfoyle and Gary Dourdan were all offered minor raises in exchange for more airtime in a take-it-or-leave-it scenario.”
Eads' reps at the William Morris Agency and Fox's handlers at Int'l Creative Management declined comment on the matter, as did CBS.

While many fans are shocked at this turn of events, even some industry veterans, said Variety, were surprised at this hard-line stance taken by CBS, particularly since these actors are long-time members of a hit show that has “generated hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising sales and syndication profits for CBS and Alliance Atlantis. “ The article went on further to indicate that CBS is determined to stand its ground due to the increasing amount of performers refusing to return to work until salaries are renegotiated, citing the nasty case of cast members from the comedy "Everybody Loves Raymond."

THE REST OF THE CAST: There are conflicting reports, stating that only Dourdan showed up for work on Thursday. Reportedly the 'supporting cast' (Eads, Dourdan, Fox, Guilfoyle) earn $100,000 an episode, while Helgenberger pulls in $200,000 and Petersen, for his dual acting-producing duties, pulls in $500,000 an episode. Variety indicted both Helgenberger and Petersen failed to report to the set, “but for health reasons industry insiders said were legit,” but might also looking for raises.

THE FUTURE: Variety reports that a search has been launched for replacement actors, “with producers likely to create characters to replace those played by Fox and Eads.”
This news is bittersweet, being reported on the same day that CSI was nominated for a Best Drama award at the 56th Annual Emmys.
The first episode is (or was) called “Viva Las Vegas,” and may be vastly rewritten or even scrapped in view of the situation.

Jul 15 2004 - Variety has just broken the news that "EYE AXES 'CSI' DUO - Moonves gets tough - Blood is on the floor at "CSI": CBS has fired thesps George Eads and Jorja Fox from the hit Eye drama for breach of contract. Eye toppers Leslie Moonves and Nancy Tellem, apparently drawing a line in their sand, made the decision after Eads -- looking for a pay hike -- failed to show up to work Thursday, the first day of production on the new season of the skein. Fox did come to work, but insiders said her reps were looking for more oney, and CBS fired her after Fox failed to reply to a letter asking her if she had any plans to show up to work. Both Eads and Fox were in the fifth year of seven-year pacts. A search has begun for new actors to join the show. No word if the parts will be recast, or new characters will be created. A follow-up article on USA Today also said that "Co-star Marg Helgenberger also is angling for more money, and although she called in sick Thursday, she is expected to return. The other actors, including William Petersen, were not affected."
