According to a Newspoll released last week, 38% of Australians support gay marriage, 44% are against and 18% are uncommitted. Among 18-34 year olds, a majority (55%) support gay marriage and among 35-49 year olds, more support than oppose (43% to 40%).

I think those figures are interesting for two reasons. First, the issue of gay marriage seems to be far less controversial for younger people than older people so as time goes by it is more and more likely to command majority support.

Second, even now there is no longer a majority against gay marriage and there is a sizeable number of people who are uncommitted. In fact, if more than two thirds of the uncommitted people decided to support gay marriage it would command majority support.
