There are a variety of grips that can work - it depends a lot on the type/size of whistle and the size of your hand. Most involve surrounding the hole of the whistle on either side with thumb and finger or two fingers. If the hole is covered too much, the sound is muffled. The good sound comes from a big breath and the subtle movement of the fingers over the hole to change the tone. Find someone in your association with a good whistle tone and see how they grip the whistle.
