In a previous post, somebody mentioned that Rugby Union referees are given much more 'respect' than Rugby League referees. While I agree that rugby union players do use nicer words than rugby league players, I disagree that this is because they are more respected.
I know that as a referee I don't like it when a player gives me a gobful. But I prefer it that they do, then not. When a player starts mouthing off, at least you know where you stand with that player. Nothing drives me more insane than a player going yes sir, no sir when I know that they completely disagree...its patronising.
If a player wants to give it to me, normally I will just turn my back to them and get on with things. I will then say something to them on the fly along the lines of "you got that off your chest, now get on with it". I think then they truly give me a level of respect.
