FOR AN OBSTRUCTION TO OCCUR THERE IS 2 MAIN THINGS TO CONSIDER:
A) DID THE ATTACKING PLAYER MAKE CONTACT WITH THE DEFENDER?

AND

B) DID THE ATTACKING TEAM GAIN AN ADVANTAGE?

I think if you look at "obstruction" this way its fair on both teams. If a team put on a good attacking play and the defender makes a wrong read, then the attacking team should NOT be penalised, but if the defender is hindered in his attempt to make a tackle, it should be pulled up for obstruction.

I thought the NRL looked to clarify the rule last year after we had a penalty-a-thon at the start of last year for obstructions mainly, but looking at the media and the fact that everyone is still unsure as to "what is an obstruction?", that would be the main grey area in the game still.
