I have to agree with the Ed (no, I actually HAVE TO, unless I do so four times a week I get BANNED from here), Rage Against the Poteen is one of the COOLEST names for a band I've ever heard.

And they actually follow that by PLAYING MUSIC as well? Marvellous stuff Eek and Ken.

I dunno, Steve, Rage against the Poteen sounds like they've signed the Pledge. Pioneers forever! Not.

Er, hold it right there, Peter.

A drop of poteen from one of my Uncle Paul's "homemade" vintages brewed specially in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, burned a hole in my skirt once. The evil swine replaced the holy water in one of my mother's protective bottles with poteen to wind up another Uncle, Fr Tom (Tom being one of the white fathers, having spent time as a missionary in Ghana and Nigeria. He was rather an alarming kind of priest. Very fond of reciting death notices. In the middle of the night if neccessary. Still sends my mother lists of dead people to cheer her up). Anyway, rather unfortunately, in the middle of a particularly vicious thunderstorm, mammy grabbed her "holy water" bottle and sprinkled it liberally about the house. My skirt was the most serious casualty. Thank god no one lit a cigarette or I wouldn't be here to tell the tale.

To say I felt a certain amount of rage against the poteen under these circumstances would be an understatement, and I'm certainly not a candidate for the pioneers!

In what was formerly the PPs house, and a long time ago an army barracks, in a lovely village in South Armagh some very good friends of mine keep the poteen in the former tabernacle. I don't think there is any confusion with holy water...or perhaps there is.

Cath, that is by far and away the most outrageous piece of flim-flam, mis-direction, non-sequitur,gibberish and unmitigated bollix that I've ever encountered on this or any other message board. I take my hat off to you.

Personal abuse now is it? I think I'll complain to the Editor. And another thing. How come Eek, Hector, SamB and I keep coming up in bright blue on this ramshackle excuse for a message board. It makes me feel like a Daily Mail reader.

That's probably because you put an email address in the relevant box, Peter. Dangerous thing, you might get Steve sending you mail!

There was a time until fairly recently when I used to get mail from Steve. However, I think I must have upset him because now despite the fact that I sit and wait for most of the day and night, nothing comes through. I rather think I've been jilted.

Cath,

I think my Uncle Charlie met your Uncle Paul one day on the road out of Enniscrone because he talks of meeting a man who, on learning he had a heavy cold, offered him a 'cure'.

A few hours later he was driving into Ballymote town when he met a funeral coming down the hill to the Church. Being the respectful soul that he is (and he's another who reads the death notices first thing each morning 'because you never know' - I suppose its as well to be sure you haven't passed away in the night!) he stopped to pay his respects.

It was then he noticed that (at least as far as he was concerned) there were 3 hearses side by side across the road (for those who don't know Enniscrone is a good 30 miles from Ballymote!) which made him realise he was 'a little worse for wear'.

Anyhow, he drove home and took to his bed for three days because each time he got up ('with a divil of a thirst') he fell over after drinking a few glasses of water.

To this day he says it was the worst cold he has ever had in 80+ years!
