A message from someone who was actually there at the show in 86...

Live at Union Square was a whittled down extract from a nearly 30-minute set that included their routine with beatbox Ready Rock C ("Rock the House") and ended with their at-the-time first and only single on Word-up records "Girls ain't nothing but trouble". An amzing show that was also broadcast on New York radio at the time, so for those who really want to hear it, it's possible to track down.

First off, there were no "samples" used! Jeff was simply cutting two records back and forth repeating teh breaks, just like all great hip hop DJ's have done. In effect, this could be described as "live sampling", but let's get the vernacular correct - Jeff was mixing and cutting it up, in his trademark tranceformer style.

Okay, so the records - Jeff opens his set with "Got to be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, follows with "Apache" by the Incredible Bongo Band, and ends with "Dance to the Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly. The track on teh album ends there, but the show continued with Jeff pulling out all the stops, including killer routines with "Shout" by MC Craig G, "Bring the Beat Back" by Steady B and "Just Buggin" by Whistle...Ah, if only y'all had been there...
