GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council Tuesday approved an amendment of the city’s existing ordinance, which expands the area where skaters and bicyclists are prevented from riding on curbs and sidewalks.

The 6-0 vote of the Council means roller skates, skate boards and bicycles are also banned from public parking lots downtown.

“It does not effect driving down the street on a bicycle,” said Council member Wayne Gilmore. “We’re just moving the existing boundaries having to do with sidewalks.”

Following the vote, though, one local church official came up with an offer which will allow skaters to have a place of their own, starting this summer.

City of Greenville Main Street Manager Doyle Dick said the amendment was being considered because of complaints from residents about skateboarders in the downtown area. In researching the existing ordinance, he said, it was found that some streets were never included. The amended ordinance would cover just about all of the downtown area.

The ban encompasses sidewalks, walkways, curbs and public parking lots within the Central Area zoning district, including Pickett Street, from King to Bois D’Arc; Washington and Lee Streets, between Wright and Bois D’Arc; Jordan Street, between Oak and Gordon Streets; Wright Street, between Washington and Henry; King Street, between Pickett and Blades; Oak and Gordon Streets between Pickett and Jordan; Moore Street, from Pickett to Washington; Wesley, St. John, Stonewall and Stuart Streets from Crockett to Jordan; and Johnson Street, between Crockett and Henry.

Mayor Pro Tem Glen Steed said he was concerned that the amendment would appear to prohibit people from walking their bikes through public parking lots, although Council member Chris Bracken said it was unlikely anyone would be cited for the activity.

Later in the meeting, a representative with Crossroads Assembly of God said the church is in the process of building a skatepark addition, with the first phase of the project expected to be complete by June.
