No Way! You don't have to be advanced to get closer to Guru; its the other way around, you advance by being closer to Guru. Even when he was alive, he was not that accessible to many disciples. He advised disciples to stay in contact with him via concentration at the Christ Center. Below is an excerpt from a talk given by Brother Anandamoy at the 2004 Convo (also posted somewhere on the Web but I can't find it right now):

'“Another thought,” Brother said. “People have been calling me a “direct disciple”. I’ve always hated that, and I always think, ‘Why, this is a caste system!’” (Laughter) All of you are direct disciples if you allow yourselves to be. Meditate with Master. Love Master, who lives inside of you. Be onewith Master and you too are his direct disciples. All I did was meditate with the picture of Master in front of me, as I do now. So use a picture of Master to cultivate that relationship – affirm he is there. “I am with him.” That is how you become a direct disciple.

He is with you. Some people say to Brother, “But you saw him.” Brother tells them, “Yes, I saw him, but that was 55 years ago! What did I do in the meantime? You don't think I didn't have to work on this too?" Brother said he developed the habit to be with him. He worked on that – he cultivated love for Master – he kept his picture on his altar and he constantly cultivated the thought: “Master is here. I am in his presence.” And it became more and more real to him, even better than when he saw him physically. Anybody can do it if you want to, and if you make the effort.

Feel he is there. Feel why you were drawn to him – because he is your own. His love is unconditional. Feel, “I am his own.” Unconditional love. If you do that, more and more you will feel his love – you will see how close he is, how deep is his love, and you will feel how satisfying that love is. Spend time with him - love him. Be a direct disciple. Be a direct disciple.'
