Its been my experience that Kriya brings about the evenness of breath in the two nostrils even if it is nt there before or necessarily during practice.

The four recommended periods of day for Kriya (dawn, noon, dusk, midnight) are said to be natural periods when the flow of breath in the two nostrils are more even than normal.

As re: devotion, quality etc. My approach is that devotion as related to Kriya itself is to give it undivided attention and care during practice. That includes length of practice, intensity, degree of attention (concentration) etc. So in then end all these seemingly seperate factors are actually one.
