Walking was such a mindless exercise, allowing the mind to wander wherever it chose. The trees had begun to thin out some time ago, but so deeply in thought was the traveler that she did not notice. It was the bright light of the sun reflecting it's light and spawning miniature rainbows on the surface of a waterfall fed lake that jolted her back to her surroundings. She had no idea where she had traveled to, but the forest that she had been traveling in seemed almost reluctant to draw closer to the sparkling lake. The trees stopped growing and a soft carpet of grass surrounded the water, and looking around she would almost bet money that the trees stopped in an almost perfect circle. She wondered if this was simply nature showing off one of it's many wonders, or if the hand of man had worked towards increasing the natural beauty of this place.
Sliding the pack from her back, she unhitched her almost dry canteen and walked over to the shimmering lake. Holding her hand just above the water she mutters a few words. Her mother had taught her how to find out if the water was safe to drink, and how to detect poison, both of which were minor spellls that she was able to do. Of course being limited in magic had been one of the very few things she had disappointed her mother in. Her mother had hoped that she would inherit the magic of her elven heritage. She hadn't, or rather she had, but the magic was so very low that she could get away with a simple spell like water scrying or detecting poison. Spells that rendered the user invisible, transported them to an alternate location or granted control of the elements, all of them were beyond her ability. The Bardic gift she had inherited from her father and mother both, and the wandering feet she had inherited solely from her father. Now the ability to find out if the water was drinkable was the only thing she cared about, the water looked so cool and inviting and she was thirsty.
When the water was deemed safe, the spell having not reacted at all to the water, she poured out the remaining water in her canteen, and watched as the old warm stuff soaked into the ground. Holding the canteen under the clear water she rinsed it once before refilling it and taking a long drink. Before she knew it the water in the canteen was gone and she refilled it for the second time. Sealing it firmly she set it beside her and splashed some of the water on her face, smoothing back a few errant strands of hair with her wet hands. Standing she went and reattached her canteen to her pack. She turned for a final look at the lake before shouldering her belongings and leaving, following the same direction that had brought her here.
