Councillor claims areas are 'no-go'

A policing boss has denied there are "no-go" areas in Antrim after a UUP council candidate claimed motorists are afraid to drive along a stretch of road where sectarian clashes frequently erupt.

Chief superintendent Bill Woodside said that occasionally trouble does break out at the sectarian "interface" between the Rathenraw and Stiles estate at Stiles Way, but it was not completely lawless.

Council candidate Jim Sands, who lives in Stiles, told a meeting of Antrim District Policing Partnership in Randalstown this week that people in Stiles are forced to drive to an entrance at the opposite end of the estate.

He said trouble often flares in spring and summer months and nationalists from Rathenraw often launched attacks, using trees as cover.

Mr Sands said the trees need to be cut down and that CCTV cameras are needed.

But the police chief hit back saying that while he accepted there is a problem, nowhere in Antrim is a no-go area.
