UUP HIGHLIGHTS DISCRIMINATION AGAINST UNIONISTS IN NEW LEAFLET

http://www.uup.org/

The Ulster Unionist Party today published a new leaflet, to be distributed across the Province, entitled ‘it’s not fair’.

The leaflet highlights a number of areas where Unionists are being discriminated against including:

Direct Rule Ministers basing rates and water charges on the capital value of your home. This imposes an unfair tax burden on Unionists.

Discrimination against state schools: The government admits that proposed school budgets will reduce yearly funding in the state sector by £3 per pupil and increase funding in the maintained (Roman Catholic) sector by £5 per pupil.

Discrimination in police recruiting: The 50/50 rule for police recruitment is blatant religious and political discrimination. The UUP is completely opposed to the 50/50 rule. Recruitment should be on merit alone.

Government and the Equality Commission ignore unionist concerns over fair employment. The government accepts republican spin alleging discrimination against nationalists. The facts tell a different story. In the past 7 years more Roman Catholics have been appointed to public sector jobs than would have been expected given the number of applicants. Only 37.5% of staff appointments in the Equality Commission itself in 2003 were from the Unionist community.

Discrimination in denying citizens the right to freedom of assembly: The re-routing or banning of Loyal Order parades because of the threat of organised, sectarian violence by republicans must stop. The UUP demands the abolition of the Parades Commission and new laws upholding the right to peacefully parade.

Speaking today as the document began hitting letterboxes across the country, UUP Assembly Chief Whip and Westminster Candidate for East Londonderry David McClarty said,

“Ulster Unionists believe in fairness and decency. Every person in Northern Ireland is entitled to respect. Government policy to date has been seen to unfairly discriminate against Unionists instead of rewarding according to merit. We want to see a level playing field created where the equal citizenship enjoyed elsewhere in the United Kingdom is enjoyed here. This leaflet highlights areas of concern where the UUP is committed to putting things right. It should offer food for thought in every Unionist household in Northern Ireland.”
