The problem is that Rhythmic Gymnastics is more than just a sport, it is a culture and culture cannot be changed in a matter of years, it takes much longer. True, the fact that British Gymnastics keeps chopping and changing and cutting back on funding and access to training facilities doesn't help matters but maybe this is me being pessimistic, I cannot see GBR being a top nation for a couple of reasons 1. Politics (we won't go into that, enough said) 2. Time. In the UK RG isn't the gymnasts' career and this is good, as when they retire at least they have an education and a life after gymnastics. In Eastern Europe RG comes before school, and although the gymnasts are signed up in schools, they rarely attend and train up to 10 hours per day 6 days a week. This is what is required to succeed in RG, not a couple of hours a day here or training in the national training centre for a few weeks before a championships. The new Spanish group coach said to the gymnasts "You choose school or gymnastics", and they are making some ground, but this will never happen in our country (and this is good). I can understand why British Gymnastics feels reluctant to back RG, in 2001 our team was 10th in the World Championships which was a brilliant result, following this more money was pumped into RG but with what result?? The results have steadily got worse and worse. Why? I don't have a lot of faith in the "World Class Start" system or whatever it's called, I don't particularly see the point in it, no such complicated structures and they manage just fine. Generally, I think we should worry less about matching the likes of Russia and Ukraine as frankly, it is never going to happen but should be more concerned about setting realistic targets and improving little by little to try and get more support from British Gymnastics.
