Mystic River should have won Best Director and Best Picture. I thought Clint Eastwood made a movie that was totally engrossing and relentlessly thoughtful, if depressing as all get out. All of the actors were awesome. The script was excellent. And it had a unified tone and vision (dark, really dark, but cohesive).

LOTRROTK was too long by half an hour. For me, any movie that has me squirming in my seat waiting to get the flock out of there loses points. But I think it deserved all its technical awards, and then some.

I couldn't pick a best actor this year, but I wanted Bill Murray to win, mostly because I think he's really underrated. Also, he's kind of a creepy crush of mine. Sean Penn IS probably the best actor of the bunch.

I didn't see Monster, and, while I'm sure Charlize Theron turned in the performance of her career (wouldn't be too hard), I'm really tired of actresses having to play ugly to win Best Actress. Nicole Kidman had to put on a fake nose, Charlize Theron had to pack on 40 lbs. Julia Roberts had to shave her pits and put on a bra. Halle Berry - okay, so there's not much Halle Berry can do to make herself ugly, but you get my point. I liked the little girl from Whale Rider. She gave a performance that keeps me thinking to this day.

On reading Shakespeare, you have to start with the right play (my favorite place to start is with The Taming of the Shrew - no wisecracks, please). Get a really good ANNOTATED copy. The good versions will have all the dirty jokes in the footnotes and will also have some historical context. Take your time through the first reading. Check every footnote as you go through it (painful, but worthwhile). Then go to your local video store and rent two movies: one faithful rendition of the play and one modern adaptation of the play. For TTOTS, my faves are the Zefirelli (sp?) version of TTOTS w/ Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Modern adaptations include 10 Things I Hate About You and Deliver Us From Eva. Watch the old one (keep the book with you in case you need it), then the new one, then the old one again. Forget about reading - enjoy the show.
