Not just with this story, either. I mean, think about it, they wouldn't even have to put Starr in any real danger of molestation if they wrote it right. The guy she thought she was talking to was looking for a 15-year-old. Pervs can be pretty specific about what they like, and a pederast who likes kids who've reached puberty wouldn't necessarily be interested in a kid Starr's age. But he wouldn't want her running home to tell on him, either. So, MM/JG wouldn't have had to be gutsy in, say, a Megan McTavish Rape-the-Lesbian kind of way. It would have been gutsy in a Megan McTavish killer clowns and rose tatoo kind of way - but the story would not have had to be garish or ridiculous or boring.
Travis could have been part of the story, since he was also posing as a teenager and could have been picked up the same way as Starr. And he would be more expendable than Starr, if MM/JG thought it was necessary to kill or hurt someone.
My main problem with this story is that it romanticizes internet hook-ups ----WITH PRE-TEENAGERS. WTF????
I think any story they wrote would be used to move T&B back together, because it's been 4 months since they broke up, and Todd's dead square in the middle of another lie. You can set your watch by those two.
Other stories where they turned chickenshit:
1. T&B rape, I mean brain tumor. I thought having Todd in another rape s/l was a bad idea, and I guess I'm not the only one, because what could have been an interesting story turned into lame melodrama with a SPD twist to make everything all hunky dory again. It would have been better (I think) to leave it unclear in Blair's mind (but then TIIC would have had to sit out a few sweeps period T&B make up, T&B break up stories). It would have been MUCH better to do the story I think they originally planned, but with different characters (Paul and Nat? Blair and Kevin?).
2. Al and Marcie and Michael. Don't get me wrong. I like Michael and Marcie - it's a real relief to have at least one couple be sweet on each other - but I hated the Heaven Can Wait fix. They could have brought Al back as Al (is that somehow inherently less believable than Luna traipsing all over town with Dead Al?).
3. The Music Box Killer could have thinned the Llanview herd a little better. I'm not saying Days has the right idea, but there are a lot of characters on the Llanview canvas with less shelf-life left than Gabrielle had (Jen Rappaport, I'm looking at YOU).
And that's just this year.
