I cannot believe the finale of that lame-assed pimp show made me cry. This was the first season I watched (long story - Samson doesn't go to bed early anymore, so we need to find something child-friendly but not child-engaging in that time-slot). I wasn't super-involved. Intrigued by the Hawaiian power-voters, yes (wish they'd re-make one of those old Frankie and Annette movies with Jasmine and the other teeny-boppers from this year - but if they did, they'd need to dub Jasmine's singing). Invested in the outcome, not so much. But last night, at the very end, I totally lost my shit.

When Fantasia won, she, like, collapsed in Diana's arms, and I couldn't see what she said to Diana, but I could see Diana mouthing "I know. It's okay." And I just bawled. For both of them

In that moment, I felt like I'd gotten to see a very un-spun moment between two very real young women, and it smacked me right upside the noggin.

We (western civilization) haven't done very well at teaching young women how to compete. We all have to do it, but most women I know are not super graceful about it. I know women who rely solely on whatever assets they have (be that competence, sex appeal, or some extraordinary talent) and go out of their way NOT to be compared to any other women. They're "above" trying to win. They "just do the best I can and don't worry about anyone else." I know women (including some pageant contestants) who hate, fear, and envy anyone seen as competition and will not think twice about playing a smoother Tonya Harding trick or 12. Backbiting bitches. But I know very few women who (a) think it's okay to toot their own horns, (b) don't get over-involved in personal politics, (c) play to win, and (d) live to play another day whatever the outcome.

Most guys are trained from very early on to do just that. Win a few. Lose a few. Stay friends with all the players. I think I just saw a little of that last night. And it made me cry.
