Subject: I feel so cheap. Thank you MM/JG....

Okay, let me say first that I've been "softened up" over a number of years to accept stories that don't even approach some of the worst ones from years past. So, take a grain of salt with what I have to say....

I, uh,

LIKE,

uh,

Heart of a Lord II.

FUCK! Okay. I said it. I like this story. It's not my all-time favorite, but it comes very close to what I think soap opera should be.

It is a true umbrella story, really the first one I've seen since Who Killed Georgie (and we all know how well that turned out). There are new characters who are not really tied to anyone (paging Dr. Long), new characters who are tied to core characters (Paul Cramer's waiting for you on the tarmac), sophomore characters (Marcie and the McBain Brothers), and Viki and Dorian - who between them are connected to just about everyone in Llanview. Everyone in town gets a little piece of this story. Except, maybe, Blair - who jmo is overdue for a break and seems to be making some progress in her own journey.

Yeah, there's some stuff in the story that sketches me out - Viki looking like she's probably going to end up with Ben's heart - but, they're sort of selling it to me (the dream was heavy-handed, but I'm much more forgiving than I used to be - YES, they will be together forever. I get it. They will dance. Every time Viki does the nasty on a pool table, Ben will be there chugging away with her.) But, there's so much GOOD about this.

It's tying up a loose end. Viki can have her cake and eat it, too. She and Ben are forever, and she also gets freed up for a new love, if that's what she wants.

It's bringing Jessica and Kevin in for some sympathetic interaction AWAY from their disgusting romantic entanglements. Speaking of which...

Characters I've had a tough time standing are involved non-romantically with characters I love. And it's not making my eyes bleed. MM/JG are doing two things I haven't seen done in years - the characters aren't in every frickin scene or in stories where they don't belong, and they're not trolling my favorite couples. I'm getting used to them a little bit at a time, in believable (for a soap) situations.

The story is more like a spiderweb than it is like an umbrella. There's a center to it, with lots of little spin offs, room for everyone, more than one mystery, more than one love story. It ends a couple of stories, begins a few more.

I also like that most of the characters involved have more than one thing going on. Dorian's got her romance with David, the Adriana thing, the Dr. Long thing, and this (and every time she's with Viki, I start bawling). David's got Dorian, whatever happens with Adriana, the Paul connection, and the baby switch. Todd (well, sigh, he was so sweet to Kelly about that dead body in the room - and so competent in a crisis!) has this and Blair and the baby switch and the nail Kevin to the wall thing. Jess has this and Poleboy.

I'm rambling, but somewhere in all of it I'm trying to say that I actually have hope for this story. I actually have hope for the characters. Every day I hate someone a little less - or learn to love to hate him/her a little more.

I feel like I'm seeing a little bit of character development. I sense that there is structure to this plot. Of course, TIIC are free to disabuse me of this at any time, but, for now, I'm happy.

It's going to get better! Well... As long as Michael doesn't turn Llanview into PC II. (Spoilers)Lafaux17:13:06 05/27/04 Thu
