Marco Dane was the prototype for sooooo many villain-to-antihero characters, and Gerald Anthony played him to perfection. I'm trying to think - it was a long time ago - but I am pretty sure that Marco was the first serious, serious baaadaaassss to (a) survive his sweeps murder and (b) actually change for the better.
Marco wasn't the first twin-switch/return from the dead, but he's the first one I remember who turned out to be the DEAD twin. "Mario" came to town after Marco's death, practiced medicine, and went a long way toward making amends for the evil nasties Marco had perpetrated on everyone in town, especially Karen Wolek. Mario was a saint. Marco not so much, but after he was found out, he did not return to his former villainy OR continue to ride "Mario's" white steed. He made a new way, as a bad guy with a good heart. He was still cruel, but he saved it for the deserving. He fell in love, several times, and got his heart broken.
And, be still my heart, the love of a good woman never transformed him. Not really. But, and this was a major transformation, he did learn how to love women. Really love them.
Marco's "better half" back in the day was Brad Vernon, another bad boy - BUT from a good family. Brad looked like a catch from the outside, but the viewers knew better, and, to the writers' credit, so did they. Marco and Brad traveled in the same circles, loved the same women. Both had mellowed enough by the end of their tenures that the dynamic between them had lost its fire. That made me sad, and I blame Rauch (who compensated me with Max Holden, a character whom I love to this day but who could not have existed but for G.A.'s work).
Gerald and Marco gave us, among others, Luke Spencer and Todd Manning. Those characters' misdeeds would have marked them, before Marco, for certain - and final - death some February, May, or November. Marco and Brad gave us, among others, the Luke-Stefan and Todd-Kevin long-term feud arcs. I feel hopeful that Malone sees Todd-Kevin as more like Marco-Brad, both bad, with the main differences being attributable to upbringing, not inherent goodness.
Gerald and Marco gave me one of my all-time favorite couples of convenience: Dorian and Marco, who paved the way for Dorian and David (David really is who Marco was by the time he left Llanview).
My secret wish for a Dorian-Marco-David triangle is dust. Rest in peace, Gerald. You gave me many hours of joy.
