I think I might have briefly mentioned Bullfighting in another post but not did not explore it as much as I would have liked so I'm glad you posted about it. I think Bullfighting is a fascinating ritual. I have never seen one but my mom has. She went to Spain when she was in high school. She described it as "brutal, exciting and crowded". She also mentioned how it is not as gory as it usually is portrayed in movies, etc. It is obviously highly ritualized – since there are specific movements and the matadors have special outfits to make them stand out more. My mom also described it as simply a sport, a contest between the bull and matador. When she was the there Generalissimo Franco (leader of Spain at the time) was even in attendance; so it is very much part of their culture. I looked around for more info on the origins and Wikipedia talks about Roman, etc. influence on them. A few other websites said that is probably started in 711 AD in honor of King Alfons VIII being crowned.
