I've posted a link to a YouTube video that shows a bull dying. Don't watch it if you don't like watching things like that.

A friend of mine studied in Sevilla, Spain, for a semester in 2007, and though he has great admiration for bullfighting as a part of Spanish culture, he had me watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBsFYufCD0E&feature=related. I'm not an animal rights activist, and neither is he, but still, the video is kind of horrifying. I think it's because of the appearance of blood and the unexpected, public nature of the violence. There is immense grace and honor in the bullfighting ritual. The death of the bull in this video, though, exposes the ritual for what it is, the ceremonious killing of a bull, and in this case, the ceremony all but disappears.

The camera is sure to capture people leaving the arena. Whether they're leaving in disgust or because the fight is over, it's hard to tell, and I'm more than willing to accept that this video was created and cut with a clear agenda in mind. Activists jumped at the opportunity when this video came out, as you might expect. (Notice the "Requiem for a Dream" music.)

My Spanish is a little rusty, but the on-screen words at the end say, "Each November the bullring remains filled with fans...and yet we ask ourselves, Why is there so much evil in the world?" I think the political argument here is a bit thin, but in terms of linking violence to violence, it's something to think about.
