Subject: More of the double bind in Long Day

I think you also see the double bind in James's relationship with his sons. For instance, he urges Jamie to pursue a career in acting, encouraging his son to imitate him, and he says he admires (well, sort of) Edmund for temporarily experiencing the poverty that was so prevalent in his own childhood. But I think you see the "pushing" aspect of the double bind clearly in a comment he makes to Edmund. Edmund has just finished explaining why he likes the fog, when O'Neill writes:

"TYRONE
Impressed and at the same time revolted
You have a poet in you, but it's a damned morbid one."

I'm not sure of this, not being an actor myself, but it seems like the actor might view the writer as the one career whose glory surpasses that of the player. The writer creates the plays that the actors depend on. So it makes sense that Tyrone would on the one hand appreciate the art that his son is capable of but also resist the possibility that Edmund could surpass him.
