Subject: Edmund's models
In reply to: Erin Risch 's message, "More of the double bind in Long Day" on 14:09:00 03/29/08 Sat

After posting this, I began to think about poor Edmund, who has two models simultaneously giving him the double bind. Both Tyrone and Jamie want Edmund to imitate them but not to surpass them. To make it more complicated, one of Edmund's models (Tyrone) is a model for the other (Jamie). And Jamie is following the "don't imitate me" part of the double bind from Tyrone, so Jamie is essentially saying to Edmund, "Imitate me, i.e., don't imitate Tyrone," and then, more subconsciously, "Don't imitate me." No wonder they find so much relief uniting against Mary.
