Subject: Elsie Dinsmore and Mimesis

First, I'm very sorry for reading Elsie Dinsmore and for posting on it. I will not talk about the story at all, only a personal reminiscence. Anyone who has glanced through some of the 28-volume series knows they're just awful. Elsie is very virtuous, but Finley's writing is something no poor little girl should have to endure.

When I was 8, my mom bought us Elsie Dinsmore books. Granted, I like some of the big new words in them, but more than that, I liked reading them faster than my sister Lindsay did. And even more than this, we both loved reading them even faster than he Garrett girls. Nobody loved the Elsie series more than the Garrett girls, and nobody read more of it, until Lindsay and I came along. We devoured 25 pink-bound volumes of Southern garden parties and vacations at sea and belles fainting from sick headaches and anguish over disobedient girls and women who wear too many ruffles and boys who won't finish their German lesson. Why? To beat the Garrett girls. I beat them, and it was the last reading contest in which I ever contended.
