Subject: The Eternal Boyfriend

So I was talking with one of my friends at home, who just broke up with his girlfriend of 3 and 3/4 years because their relationship just wasn't as "passionate" as it used to be. He was telling me that they might start dating again later, but that he might look into some other girls first. And then he said that he hopes that she will "get with" (his words, not mine, I'm just presenting the narrative) another guy, too. At first my mind just went into shock mode, and I was thinking, "Why in the world would you ever want that!?!" But then I remembered Girard mentioning Dostoevsky's story "The Eternal Husband," in which the eternal husband needs internal rivals to always be desiring his wife so that he, too, might desire her more.

I briefly toyed with explaining mimetic theory to my friend, but I finally opted out. :)
