Disguise may be a way of creating distinction without resorting to violence. Girard points out that adult humans avoid direct and obvious rivalries, like two men wanting the same salt shaker at the dinner table. Maybe disguise is a way of preventing rivalry in more indirect circumstances; in other words, of yielding without necessarily giving way.
