Well, the masks and disguises in Lear have a strong connection to the Nature theme. Going back to Edmund's prediction of widespread unnaturalness in 1.2.143-49. Everyone who participates in this unnatural behavior, "between the child and the parent", and "divisions in state", does not wear their natural countenance, but assumes a different one.

I once read about the role of masks in primitive ritual. One reading of this is, that since ritual is a reenactment of violence, and violence is an unnatural thing to do, the people participating in the ritual assume unusual faces and costumes as they appropriate pseudo-violent behavior. Priestly vestments in Christian services correspond to this somewhat. The divine service is something unusual and extraordinary; so priests wear special clothes.

If Dr. Jackson or anyone has comments on my reading of ritual, they're welcome.
