I think that there can be situations of both. You can model after a single characteristic of someone, ignoring everything else. For example, you could hate the personality of an artist, but still admire their technique and aspire to imitate it. You can also attatch yourself to the whole of another person, like how I admire my mother as a person and consequently (and sometimes even annoyingly) find myself exemplifying many of her habits or characteristics.

It might be a way of picking and choosing - both subconsciously and consciously. You can consciously pick certain characteristics to model, like the technique of an artist even though you are repulsed by others. You can also be subconscious about it, like me finding myself acting like my mother at moments. It's an interesting question to raise.
