I think that a distinction between "sameness" and "commonality" needs to be made. I think what Girard is trying to establish with "sameness" is seen exactly with twins. There is that eerie sense of the two being very much the same. For a more modern example, I think that the same fear could be used in the issue of cloning. The "sameness" that is found in clones is a frightening thing to a lot of people even today. We have that fear of "sameness".

However, I don't think that there is an inherent fear of "commonality". Commonality is a way in which individuals are able to see that they share at least a little something with another individual. There is still that distinction between the two individuals that serves to balance and harmonize with the commonality.

I think that in the context of Christianity the better word to use might be "commonality" in ritual instead of "sameness". Maybe this is why there is less violence? Commonality finds a balance where as sameness would lead to fear and more violence in ritual?
