I think you touch on it in your last paragraph. I wonder at the point of learning about our negative reactions to sameness. I don’t think the best final response is just to avoid doubles, as primitive religions do. Creating differences remains great on a practical level; now that we know this about ourselves, we probably can improve our relationships by creating differences. But I think a more important response to learning about our vain reactions to sameness is to reject vanity, not similarity. As Paul says in the passage you quote, God has no problem with some kinds of sameness, so if we have a problem with it, it’s ours to solve.

Not that we can solve it. Perhaps Christianity is unique in that by making all who believe the same under the cross, it purposes to change human nature so that we are united by our sameness. Or if “change human nature” is too problematic a phrase, Christianity means for us to take up the new nature and nail up the old.
