Subject: Lamech misread
In reply to: Kiernan 's message, "Some Thoughts on Justice and the Bible" on 12:39:11 02/13/08 Wed

It appears to me therefore, that Lamech misunderstands the declaration of God no matter which way the text is read, whether that God is establishing a life for a life as a judicial norm, or whether he is merely anticipating the cycle of violence which will now begin. Lamech misreads this annoucement and explodes the level of violence. Not only does Lamach boast that he will kill a man for merely striking him, he also declares that he will be revenged 7 times Cain's revenge. This misunderstanding appears to quickly spiral into the war of all against all that Girard understands ends in the violence of the floor right before which the boundary lines of the communities break down: "sons of God knew the daughters of men" birthing a race of giants. It seems that the violence of this race of giants stems back to a misreading of Cain.
