We may want to keep in mind a question from our "How to Read a Primary Source Document": Can I believe this document?

Though Dr. Jackson tells us that many of the authors we read attempt to uncover mimetic mechanisms, maybe this was not Plutarch's goal. Oftentimes, people actually believe in equality and sameness -- anyone remember taking turns and sharing in kindergarten?

So, if we think of Sparta as one giant daycare centre, where the governing authority perennially imposes and artificial behavioral structure on everyone, I think it makes much more sense. Daycare centres remain fairly ordered most of the time because they impose penalties on transgressions of snack-time/community messes.

As for lovers of the same boy becoming fast friends, it doesn't seem so far-fetched. If sharing is allowed and usual, why not share? People compete and rival one another for things that only one person can own, usually, like the throne of England, or a traditional, heterosexual lover.
