While reading chapter 10 of Violence and the Sacred and I came across this paragraph. "The punishments that the dead inflict upon the living are indistinguishable from the consequences of wrongdoing. In a small community hubris spreads rapidly, with, as we know, dire results. Thus the vengeance of the dead, like the vengeance of the gods, is both real and implacable. IT IS, IN FACT, VIOLENCE'S OWN REVENGE ON THOSE WHO WIELD IT" (255).

That would be similar to karma, correct? I just thought that it was an interesting comparison. It also brings into play the CYCLICAL nature of violence. This tendency of violence to spur more violence is a fascinating thought. Then, considering the Biblical theory of 'turning the other cheek', it just adds a whole other layer. I'm really excited to get into the differences in Girard's theory in consideration of the Judeo-Christian texts.
