Subject: Stoning

In The Violence and the Sacred, Girard suggests that "normally in mythological stories, all take part to kill the victim. This reminded me of the biblical practice of stoning, where all the members of the community would raise their hands in judgment against the one guilty member. We think of the stories of the woman caught in adultery, the man working on the sabbath, St. Stephen, and especially the example of Achen. He is described as the one responsible for the cause of Israel's defeat at Jericho, so the whole community stones him, and not only him but his whole family. Achen was guilty of the theft. Would Girard say that Achen was really guilty of Israel's defeat, or would he attribute the stoning to a scapegoat mechanism?
