Subject: Losing Distinctions in the Bacchae

As we anticipate the violence of the Bacchae, many texts continue to pop out to me that demonstrate a lack of distinction or the blurring of boundaries. Dionysius himself does not even go by one name. Yesterday we discussed the bluring of his physical identity (as even seen on the cover of our book--an effeminate masculinity). He further blurs his indentity by changing names: Bacchus, Bromius, Evius, Dionysus. Disguised as he speaks to Pentheus, Dionysus even prays to himself. This certainly creates a confusing breakdown of boundaries. Again, as Pentheus and Dionysus discuss Dionysus' rites, Pentheus aruges that "Darkness is well suited to devotion" (501). Where or not darkness is well suited to devotion is acutally a secondary concern; darkness is certainly well suited to a loss of distinction.
