I was interested in Girard's explanation of the name "son of man" for Christ in "Things Hidden" Part II, Chapter 2. He connects it to the "servant" described in the prophets. Within the context of Girard's Biblical reading, however, this name would appear to be vital. In order for Christ to undo the cycle, he must be a part of it, be born into it, and consciously choose to step outside it. This name establishes a mimetic relationship between Christ and his ancestors, a mimetic relationship which would be fraught with the violence inherent in human nature. Using this name is one way in which the Biblical authors give Christ's death its overwhelming power to reveal the system of which he is, very explicitly, born to be a part.
