A related thought: Notice Jesus' public image in Luke 9:18-22:

Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"

They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."

"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"

Peter answered, "The Christ of God."

Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."

I just find it interesting that Jesus is always leery of public approval and speculation. Also interesting is that the people not only confuse him with John the Baptist, his obvious twin in the text, but Elijah as well, "or one of the prophets from long ago [that] has come back to life." Talk about trying to perpetuate a cycle, eh?

But as for what you're saying about J the B and JC, yes, I think their relationship undercuts a lot of mythical expectations. I'm amazed at the foreshadowing, too, that later in Luke 9 and then in Luke 11, Jesus reiterates, "those who are not for me are against me." He makes a clear distinction in his society and in a way, singles himself out.
