Thanks, Betsy, for your answer. I think we may equivocate with the term "sacrifice" often. The kind of "offering up" involved in the non-sacrificial reading of the Gospels may also be called sacrifice, and I believe that may be what David calls the "broken heart sacrifice".

Now, I'm not sure whether the "offering up" of a broken heart to God by mankind counts for Girard, in the same way the "offering up" of God to himself does. Also, I'm still not entirely sure where Girard places the boundary between violent sacrificial ritual, and non-sacrificial ritual according to the Gospels.

Is "Rend your heart, and not your garment" a sufficiently peaceable, non-sacrificial commandment, because the violence now occurs only in a spiritual manner and for the proper purposes?
