I see your point. What we would call Agape-love (in the Christian sense of the word) seems entirely incompatible with hatred; however, even in cases of love in literature, the emotions connected with love are often a step away from hatred. Take Penelope, the wife of Odysseus. Of all the things he goes through, and all the situations he's escaped from by the time he gets back to Ithaca, the only time he ever seems to really lose his cool is when Penelope is pushing his buttons. Also, theres the fact that only those closest to us know how to truly hurt us (exemplified, I believe, on Penelope and her husband).
