C.S. Lewis remarks on the nearness between human love and hatred in The Four Loves. He cautions us not to make "gods" out of our loves, but rather to imitate our love after the One True God, recognizing our own limitations as fallen man. It is only being mindful of the distinctions between ourselves and our proper model, God,and between the things we love on this earth and the love we owe to God that we can navigate between love and hate:
"The likeness has been given to us [i.e. the ability to love]....Meanwhile, however, the likeness is a splendour. That is why we mistake Like for Same. We may give our human loves the unconditional allegiance which we owe only to God. Then they will destroy us, and also destroy themselves. For natural loves that are allowed to become gods do not remain loves. They are still called so, but can become in fact complicated forms of hatred."
