Good you mention the tantrum phase. I heard it from many parents, and many had warned us, but I totally forgot about it because my son somehow seemed to have skipped over it. The tantrum phase is usually exactly at the age of your son, 3 years! In German we call it the "Trotzalter" (phase of defiance). If you Google for Trotzalter, you will find a whole lot of books and even whole websites about this phenomenon. Probably there are also many web sites in English.

So maybe it is not even a deeper underlying problem of your son like jealousness, but only a normal psychological phase that shows that you child is developing self-confidence.

Anyway, you should not take that as a cheap excuse to simply do nothing about it, but also search for other reasons. Maybe the Trotzalter comes together with the increasing awareness of being not loved so much as his sister, and this is just too much for him.
